Temporary road closures, water service interruptions as Lynchburg continues its renewal project

Motorists in downtown Lynchburg should expect temporary street closures and water service interruptions as the city continues to work on Phase IV of its downtown renewal project.

Beginning Monday, August 12, the section of 12th Street between Main and Church Streets will be closed from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. for water main construction. This closure will continue through Friday, August 16.

Main Street will be open to eastbound traffic during this time to access the Lynchburg Community Market parking lot. Temporary steel parking bays will be constructed over the dig site during the day.

Water service will also be temporarily shut off to properties between the 800 and 1100 blocks of Church Street, 216 12th Street, and 1201 Main Street while the water main is connected. This will begin at 7 p.m. on August 15 and last until 6 a.m. on August 16.

Crews will work during the day on Friday, August 16 to install permanent asphalt paving on the section of 12th Street between Main and Church. The Department of Water Resources said no lane closures are expected during this time, but signage will be in place if needed. Drivers are reminded to use caution when driving through the construction site.

The Downtown Renewal Construction Project is a multimillion-dollar investment by the city to modernize aging underground utility infrastructure and improve the streetscape. It began in 2016. Once utility work is complete, each block will be restored with elements designed to improve the pedestrian and motorist experience, according to the city. These elements include paved sidewalks, historic-style streetlights, new trees and plants, and redesigned parking and loading zones.
