GEORGETOWN, Delaware – The Sussex Conservation District (SCD) is pleased to announce its second annual native tree donation drive as part of the Tree for Every Delawarean Initiative (TEDI). The event will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Vanderwende-Evans Conservation Center, 23818 Shortly Road, Georgetown. The event will be held weather permitting.

There will be over 700 native trees available, distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, with a maximum of one tree planted per person. Each tree will be labeled with a QR code that links to the TEDI tracker. Recipients will be encouraged to register their tree on the TEDI tracker, which tracks both organized and independent tree plantings across the state. To date, over 240,000 trees have been planted under this initiative.

“We are thrilled to host this event again after the overwhelming success of our first TEDI giveaway, where we picked up 200 trees in just 30 minutes,” said Jessica Watson, SCD Sediment and Stormwater Program Manager. “Native trees are critical to Delaware’s environmental resilience and provide important benefits such as shade, wildlife habitat, temperature regulation, improving air quality and mitigating stormwater runoff. I urge all Sussex County residents to participate in this initiative and help us build a more sustainable future.”

Participants are encouraged to visit the TEDI website for information on selecting, planting and caring for their trees. Six tree species will be available in 1- and 3-gallon sizes, including American sycamore, red maple, river birch, magnolia, tulip poplar and swamp oak. In addition, 3-gallon white oaks will also be available.

The Tree for Every Delawarean initiative is a collaborative effort between the Delaware Forest Service’s Urban and Community Forestry (UFC) programs, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Climate, Coastal and Energy Division, and other key stakeholders.
