Tech Byte: Deck Technology – WXXV News 25

Patrick welcomes his guest Jamie Breneman of Chattanooga Exteriors to discuss the engineering behind new decking.

Have you ever attended a summer barbecue where you’re walking across your patio, your feet are hot, and your dog doesn’t want to come along? Today on Tech Byte, I have a friend who will solve all of those problems for you. I’m Patrick Moates. Welcome to this week’s Tech Bite.

This week we have my friend Jamie Brennaman from Chattanooga, Exteriors in the studio and he’s going to tell us about new tech that helps keep your feet cool and pet-friendly at your summer BBQs. Jamie, thanks for coming. What did you bring and why is it a good fit for Tech Byte?

JAMIE: This is a new technology we’ve developed for composite decking. It’s made by Trex, the world leader in composite decking. This technology reflects sunlight and keeps your deck cooler. The biggest criticism of composite decking has always been that it gets hot. I can’t even go out barefoot. You know, I’ve heard it all. And so everything gets hot, but this technology in the coating of this board reflects sunlight, which keeps it about 15 degrees cooler, depending on the temperature.

PATRICK: How does it compare to wood, is it 15 degrees cooler than wood or composite?

JAMIE: 15 degrees cooler than composite. So, like your traditional composite, let’s say 100 degrees. This would be 85 degrees. It’s really great. I mean, we’ve gotten a lot of compliments on it. You know, the people who do this want to do composite and do it for life. They want to do it once, be done with it and enjoy it. A lot of people go to this forum because they see the benefits of it.

PATRICK: Right. I don’t have to stain it. There’s no need. And once it’s done, it’s pretty much staying there until I sell the house and move out.

JAMIE: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You just wash it off, you hose it down. If you spill anything on it, you should clean it up right away. But that’s common sense.

PATRICK: Okay. And someone like me tends to set things on fire. What if something cold rolls out of my smoker on it? Will it melt? Will it catch fire? My wife will want to know that, you.

JAMIE: No, it won’t catch fire. I mean, obviously you can take it out, pick it up, and it probably won’t hurt him. But if it does hurt him, we have a special technique that we can use to take it out and remove the burn mark, so to speak.
