TCU coach Sonny Dykes sent off against SMU after consecutive unsportsmanlike penalties

TCU coach Sonny Dykes was ejected from Saturday’s game against SMU after receiving two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties early in the second half.

TCU, trailing 41-21 at halftime, returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown, but it was called back for holding. An irate Dykes ran down the field and was seen on the CW broadcast yelling at a referee on the sideline. Strength coach Kaz Kazadi tried to stay between Dykes and the referee.

The Horned Frogs’ next play was a 22-yard gain, but Dykes apparently continued to cuss at the referees, resulting in a second unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. He was ejected from the game per the rules. A calmer Dykes continued to talk to the referees before eventually leaving the field with Kazadi by his side.

In 2016, a new rule was introduced in college football that requires coaches to receive two penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct. Bowling Green coach Scot Loeffler was the first to be ejected.

Dykes served as SMU’s head coach from 2018-2021, compiling a 30-18 record and taking the Mustangs to heights not seen since the 1980s. But he moved on to cross-town rival TCU, drawing the ire of SMU supporters. Those SMU fans waved goodbye as he left the field on Saturday. The TCU-SMU rivalry is not scheduled to continue beyond next season, meaning this could be the last time Dykes takes the field at SMU.

TCU still managed to run the length of the field and score a touchdown on its first drive without Dykes.
