Taylor Swift sits apart from Brittany Mahomes at Chiefs game amid Trump support controversy

Taylor Swift and Brittany Mahomes both cheered on the Kansas City Chiefs in their 27-20 season-opening win over the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday, but they may have different opinions on other issues.

Swift and Mahomes were seen sitting in separate suites at Arrowhead Stadium amid controversy surrounding Mahomes’ recent expressions of support for Donald Trump.

Mahomes and Swift have always sat together in suites since Swift started attending games last year after she went public with her relationship with tight end Travis Kelce. Seeing the two sit together during cutscenes and make quirky gestures became a common part of Chiefs games last season.

The two were also seen together at public events, as the friendship between Mahomes, the wife of quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and Swift, Kelce’s girlfriend of over a year, took on symbolic significance for the Chiefs in expanding their fan base among women.

But the 2024 season is starting differently, as Mahomes is embroiled in controversy for expressing his support for Trump through Instagram activity in recent weeks. Swift was seen in a suite with Kelce’s mother, Donna Kelce, while Mahomes was in a suite with their daughter, Sterling Skye, as seen on their Instagram stories.

Mahomes, a 29-year-old pregnant mother, first showed her support for Trump on August 13 when she liked Trump’s Instagram post outlining the “2024 GOP platform.”

The like sparked a storm of indignation against the wife of the superstar quarterback. In fact, Swift’s fans were among the critics. Several fan pages dedicated to Swift posted screenshots of the like on social media, thus increasing the reach of the backlash.

Mahomes responded to the criticism in her Instagram stories on August 23.

“I mean, honestly, to be a hater as an adult, you have to have deep-rooted issues that you’ve been refusing to heal since childhood,” she wrote. “There’s no reason why you hate when your brain is fully developed and you hate when others are doing well.”

A few days later, she posted another message on Instagram regarding the situation.

“Contrary to the tone of the world today… you can disagree with someone and still love them. You can have different views and still be kind,” she wrote on August 26. “Read that again!”

Last week, she appeared to like two more comments. One read “TRUMP-VANCE 2024” and another read “I’m glad you’re not backing down. We are all entitled to our own opinions and shouldn’t be pressured.”

Mahomes’ Instagram likes and the attention that followed also caught Trump himself. The former president and current presidential candidate thanked Mahomes in a post on his Truth Social account, praising her and her husband, Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes, as a “great couple.”

“I would like to thank the beautiful Brittany Mahomes for defending me so vigorously, and for the fact that MAGA is the largest and most powerful political movement in the history of our currently failing country,” Trump wrote. “With crime and illegal immigration completely out of control, inflation devastating all Americans, and a world laughing at the stupidity of our hapless ‘leaders,’ it’s nice to see someone who loves our country and wants to save it from ruin. What a great couple – see you both at the Super Bowl!”

Mahomes’ controversial Instagram like doesn’t seem to be driving a wedge between her and her husband. On Brittany’s 29th birthday on August 31, Patrick posted a series of Photos on Instagram Saturday, as he and his wife, Brittany Mahomes, celebrate their 29th birthdays. The slideshow included a group photo of them and their children, 3-year-old daughter Sterling Skye and 1-year-old son Patrick “Bronze” Lavon Mahomes III.

Patrick has never has publicly expressed his support for any political figure or affiliation, telling Time in April that he would not discuss who he would vote for in the upcoming election. Brittany and Patrick were born and raised in East Texas and began dating while attending Whitehouse High School in Whitehouse, Texas. Whitehouse is a town of about 8,500 people and has a long tradition of voting Republican, according to Data USA.

However, Brittany’s connection with Swift may turn out to be quite different after her recent social media activity.

Although Swift has not yet officially endorsed a candidate for the 2024 election, she has long been politically active with the Democrats.

Following Trump’s first election in 2016, Swift revealed her political stance for the first time by supporting Democratic candidates Phil Bredesen and Jim Cooper in the 2018 U.S. midterm elections in her family’s home state of Tennessee.

Swift also publicly supported abortion rights, LGBTQ inclusion, and gun control.

In 2020, Swift officially endorsed Joe Biden for president and condemned Trump’s presidency, which she called “racist” after the murder of George Floyd in Minnesota.
