Taylor Swift and Disney+ surprise fans in Vienna with TV premiere of Eras Tour film

Taylor Swift and Disney surprised their fans in Austria with a special opportunity to see the concert film of the Eras Tour after the pop star had to cancel her planned performances in Vienna due to a foiled terrorist attack.

Disney cooperates with the cable channel ORF to broadcast the Disney+ film Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) as a free TV premiere in Austria on Saturday evening, August 10. In addition, the streamer is offering fans who want to stream the film there from August 10 a limited-time, free seven-day trial of Disney+ Premium.

A few days earlier, on Wednesday, August 7, Vienna authorities confirmed the arrest of two men in connection with a planned attack on Swift’s scheduled concerts at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium on August 8, 9 and 10. A third male suspect was arrested the following day, according to the Associated Press.

Shortly after the first two arrests, the concert promoter announced in an Instagram post that they had “no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone’s safety.” The post was subsequently shared on the official Taylor Nation account’s Instagram stories.

Several media outlets reported that Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, head of Austria’s state security and intelligence service, said in a press conference on August 8 that one of the arrested suspects had admitted that he had wanted to carry out an attack with explosives and knives at the concert.

“His goal was to kill himself and a large number of people during the concert today or tomorrow,” Haijawi-Pirchner added on the day of the first scheduled show.

Although Swift has not canceled a concert date in the past due to similar threats, the singer previously admitted that such an attack was one of her “biggest fears.”

In a 2019 ELLE In her profile, Swift said she was “completely terrified” to tour after the attacks at Ariana Grande’s concert in Manchester, England, and Jason Aldean’s performance at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas two years earlier.

“After the Manchester Arena bombing and the shooting at the Las Vegas concert, I was absolutely terrified to go on tour this time because I didn’t know how we were going to protect three million fans for seven months,” Swift told the outlet, referring to the deadly 2017 bombing after an Ariana concert in Manchester, England, and the shooting during Jason Aldean’s performance at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas that same year.

“It took a tremendous amount of planning, expense and effort to ensure the safety of my fans,” the artist added.

Although thousands of Austrian fans will no longer have the opportunity to see Swift’s record-breaking concert sensation in their hometown, many remained optimistic by gathering in the city to sing some of their favorite hits from the star and exchange friendship bracelets – just as they would have done at the show.

A day after the news of the cancellation, Swifties flooded social media with words of support for the singer and touching messages of resilience.

“The Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna may have been cancelled, but the spirit of the Swifties cannot be broken,” wrote one person under a video of fans singing “All Too Well” from Swift’s Red Album. “That’s being a girl. Making something beautiful out of something ugly.”
