The Oklahoma State Fair is back in session on Thursday, and one of the fair’s most eagerly anticipated attractions is the wide variety of food on offer.
News 9 made it to State Fair Park before the fair officially began to check out some of the items on offer this year.
Food ratings were given based on several factors, with a maximum score of 30.
One of the first things News 9’s Lacie Lowry tried was a candied watermelon on a stick, which she rated 21 out of 30.
Next came a cookie dough parfait, and Lowry said she had a hard time not eating it all.
“It’s like all my favorite things in one,” Lowry said. “It’s hard not to eat it all.”
Overall, Lowry gave the parfait full marks.
This was followed by a “Bronut”, a doughnut with meat and pickled onions. Lowry also gave the Bronut full marks.
After the Bronut, Lowry tried a PB&J burger. Contrary to what you might think, PB&J in this case doesn’t stand for peanut butter and jelly, but rather for pulled pork, beef brisket, and jalapeno.
Next, Lowry tried a Cheeseburger Corndog, a cheeseburger that is deep-fried in the shape of a corn dog. The Cheeseburger Corn Dog is also served with barbecue sauce and horseradish dip.
For dessert, we had bacon-wrapped Oreos served with whipped cream and chocolate coating, with chipotle sauce added for an extra kick of flavor.
Overall, says Lowry, it would be worth trying as many fair dishes as possible this year.
“The best news is that the food was consistently good,” Lowry said. “You can’t go wrong with that, but my absolute favorite dish was the cookie dough parfait. The bronut, I can’t believe I enjoyed it, and it was actually one of my favorite dishes.”
After all the judges’ votes for each food were counted, an ice cream bowl called “Young Grasshopper” emerged as the winner.
The Young Grasshopper is an ice cream on a stick made from mint chocolate.
However, other dishes also won in other categories. In the “Sweetest of the Sweet” category, the Lotus Biscoff Funnel Cake took first place, and in the “Savoury” category, the Spicy Pickle Pizza won.
