Szijjártó: Hungary remains a “global sports power”

Hungary remains a “global sports power,” the foreign minister said on Facebook on Monday, adding that the country, which has the world’s 95th largest population, finished 14th at the Paris Olympics.

Szijjártó thanks athletes and coaches

Péter Szijjártó wrote on Facebook that Hungary was sixth in Europe in terms of the number of medals won in Paris and “by far” first among Central European countries. He added that “much bigger… richer and stronger countries are far behind”.

Szijjártó also said that the first 10 to 12 places at the Olympic Games “are usually taken by the biggest and strongest countries in the world… the G7, China, Korea and Australia – and of course Russia, if it is allowed to participate.” “The real competition starts here,” the minister said, welcoming that “we have come out on top in this competition together with New Zealand, Uzbekistan and Spain.”

Szijjártó noted that Hungary was one of 15 countries that had won at least five gold medals. “Glory at all levels,” he said, thanking all the athletes and coaches who had once again helped the country achieve “this glorious achievement.”

Hungary won six gold, seven silver and six bronze medals at the Paris Games and finished 14th in the medal table (after 15th place in Tokyo), between Uzbekistan and Spain.
