CHICAGO (CBS) – Two men were rescued from Lake Michigan near the Adler Planetarium on Wednesday afternoon, but one of them later died at a nearby hospital.
At 1:30 p.m., the swimmers voluntarily jumped into the water near the planetarium on the northeast end of Northerly Island and began fighting, police said.
Both men were rescued a short time later, police said.
One of the men was conscious at the time of rescue, while the other was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.
Rescue workers stormed the area around the planetarium and the concrete embankments that extend east of it over the park into the lake. Waves crashed against the seawall, on the concrete of which warnings are painted that swimming is prohibited.
In addition, swimming in Lake Michigan in Chicago was not allowed at all on Wednesday. The city banned swimming at all Chicago beaches due to dangerously high waves and currents.
