SMYRNA, Georgia – A suspected burglar was killed in a shootout with Smyrna and Cobb County police at the Adventure Outdoors gun store on South Cobb Drive.

Smyrna Police Chief Keith Zgonc said during an early morning news conference Saturday that several 911 calls came in about a break-in at the gun store around midnight. In another call, shots were fired near the intersection of South Cobb Drive and Windy Hill Road.

Chief Zgonc explained that when officers arrived on the scene, the suspect, who was inside the store, opened fire on them. An exchange of fire followed. Officers from the Smyrna and Cobb County police departments returned fire, resulting in the man’s death.

Two police officers were injured in this shooting. The officers involved were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Both officers are expected to survive.

A SWAT team was then called in to secure the store and ensure no one else was inside.

The motive for the man’s attempt to break into the store remains unclear.

Police said the investigation was still in its early stages.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was asked to investigate the use of force during the incident.
