Suspect dies after SWAT standoff near Ohio State campus

A dead man has been identified after an hours-long standoff with deputies, police and SWAT officers on Sunday.

Court documents and police confirm that Asante Taj Omar Miller died around 1:15 p.m., approximately five hours after the standoff began in the area of Ohio State University’s south campus.

Certain details of his death are still unclear.

Investigators say it all started after a resident called 911 to report that his home was being burglarized. The report said Miller was in the house with a firearm.

When officers arrived, Miller fled. When officers caught up with Miller, they said he had a gun on him.

Police say they “verbally ordered” Miller to put down his weapon several times, but he did not. The officers then shot Miller.

At this point, Miller again managed to escape from police, this time by forcibly gaining entry to another home in the 100 block of West 8th Avenue.

ABC 6 confirmed around 12 p.m. that Columbus police had attempted to obtain a warrant to enter the home.

After officers entered the home, they found Miller hiding in one of the rooms. Police said more shots were fired after that encounter, but did not provide further details.

Authorities said Miller was “later found deceased” and that no officers were injured in the incident.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is currently investigating.
