Suspect charged with murder in fatal Birmingham shooting near dice game

A suspect was arrested Thursday morning in connection with the shooting death of a man in July near a gambling venue.

Edrick Hagler, 31, is charged with the murder of 30-year-old Kameron Connell, Birmingham police announced Thursday.

Hagler was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 12:41 p.m. He was arrested by the police Crime Reduction Team.

He is being held without bail and, according to jail records, there was also a warrant out for his arrest for attempted murder.

Officers from the East Precinct were dispatched to the scene shortly after 8 p.m. on Monday, July 1, for a report of a person being shot in the parking lot of an apartment building in the 7700 block of First Avenue South.

When officers arrived, Connell was unresponsive.

Birmingham Fire Department transported the victim to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:37 p.m.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said Connell was found near places where people hung out and played dice.

“We do not know if the shooting was related to the dice game,” Fitzgerald said at the time. “However, we can indicate that when our officers observed the victim, they were in an area where dice were still on the ground.”

A motive was not disclosed.

Connell’s brother, Keleen Connell, was shot and killed by Birmingham police on February 23, 2022. Another brother, 18-year-old Kerry Connell, was shot and killed in the parking lot of a supermarket at 36 South Park Road in 2011.
