As studios and streamers make their films and series ever more epic, the pressure on the entertainment industry’s VFX artists has skyrocketed – and “The Great Streaming Wars of The 2020s” has only added fuel to the already blazing fire. If there is a silver lining in all of this, it is that the public is finally developing an understanding of the importance of post-production work and a deeper appreciation for the time it takes to make the magic happen on screen. This is exactly the topic that the co-CEO of DC Studios James Gunn (Superman, Peacemaker) was asked on Threads earlier today, with Gunn making it clear that he’s taking an approach that respects the time and space VFX artists need to get the job done.

“If you do some research, you’ll find that my films have always taken a different approach, and I’ve always given my VFX artists and crew time to do their job properly and given them the respect they deserve. And the quality of the VFX in those films is consistently great because of that (and because my friends at Weta and Framestore and ILM and others are incredibly talented),” Gunn said. “That’s why we wrapped Superman a year before it came out, and why they’ve been working hard on a lot of shots for months already. That’s why we start editing thoroughly while we’re shooting. That’s why I prepare so much, and why we only shoot scripts that are finished. And Supergirl, which I’m not directing, is handled the same way. I can’t say enough about the VFX artists who help us create magic.”

When asked if factors outside of his control – like studio-imposed deadlines – would affect his post-production preferences, Gunn says it’s not a factor because he’s already taken care of everything. “No. Because I’ve always had a script essentially months before we shoot, always a complete storyboard, and I’ve always insisted that we finish in time to do high-quality visual effects. I wouldn’t do a movie that big without putting in the right amount of post-production time,” Gunn explains.

Superman “very loyal” to comics, but has a “James Gunn twist”: Merced

Check in with Josh Horowitz and his Happy Sad Confused Podcast last week, Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl) had a message for fans who have been wondering what to expect from Gunn’s effort. “The whole movie is very faithful to the comics, but with a James Gunn twist. I think it’s really funny, clever and heartwarming…at least that was my experience on set. Of course, things can change in the editing room, but…God, I loved James,” Merced shared, explaining how Gunn created an environment on set that gave the actors “space to be excited, to have confidence and to relax into the role.”

Merced continued, “He’s so prepared. I could breathe easy on set and not worry about it afterward because James is one of those people who knows exactly what they want, will stop at nothing to get it, has a shooting list, communicates with his team and everyone is prepared when they get there because they’ve worked with him for over twenty years.” The actress added, “When someone is in charge and you’re there, you have space to be happy, to have confidence and to relax into the role. That was the most beautiful part of the experience.”
