SUPERMAN director James Gunn explains his approach to visual effects and why the film will be in post-production for a year

Filmmaker James Gunn spent quite a bit of time in the MCU and directed Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy (or “quadrilogy” if you like) The Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas Special).

As the new co-CEO of DC Studios, he seems to have learned from this as well as from a year in 2023 in which he was forced to make major cuts to Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and help to redesign The Flasha failed blockbuster that he strangely described as one of the “greatest” superhero movies of all time.

In an interview with Threads, Gunn gave insights into his approach to VFX and why Supermanwhich wrapped filming in July, will be in post-production for nearly a year.

“If you do a little research, you will find that my films have always taken a different approach and that I have always given my VFX artists and staff the time to do their job properly and given them the respect they deserve,” he explained. “And that’s why the quality of the visual effects in these films is consistently great (and because my friends at Weta, Framestore, ILM and others are incredibly talented).”

“That’s why we shot Superman a year before it was released, and why they worked hard on many shots months before. That’s why we start editing while we’re shooting,” Gunn continued. “That’s why I prepare so intensely and why we only shoot scripts. And Supergirl, which I’m not directing, is the same. I can’t praise the VFX artists enough for helping us create magic.”

It is good to hear that Supergirl: The Woman of Tomorrow is handled in the same way, especially since visual effects in the DCEU were nothing but hit and miss. Who could ever forget that? Black AdamComic villain Sabbac or The Flashs bizarre microwave scene?

Gunn later added: “My script has always been essentially finished months before shooting, the storyboard has always been complete, and I’ve always insisted that we finish in time to get high-quality visual effects. I wouldn’t make a film this big without allowing the necessary time for post-production.”

It was always difficult to fault the visual aspects of Gunn’s MCU films (despite Marvel Studios’ alleged habit of putting pressure on their VFX artists), so the adoption into the DCU bodes well for Superman and beyond.
