Sunday service held after car sped through Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church

BATON ROUGE – After a car drove through the nave of Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church, the congregation showed up for Sunday service as usual, just in a different location.

The church held its Sunday service in the building’s family center after Tervont Johnson was arrested for crashing through the church on Scenic Highway and reportedly telling police officers he had been “riding with demons” before the accident.

The damage to the church amounted to about $100,000.

“We didn’t have to leave campus to attend a service. We were blessed and thank God for that,” said Reverend Tommy Cain, the interim pastor.

When Johnson had an accident with his car, no one was in the sanctuary. He escaped without a scratch.

“Thank God no one was hurt, thank God the young man who was driving the vehicle was not hurt. We don’t know all the details of what happened or how it happened, but we’re just thankful there was no blood shed,” Cain said.

Cain said the church community has remained strong.

“We all come together, we pray together, we love each other and we wait for God because he is the end of our faith,” Cain said. “We thank people for their love and support, their prayers, just keep praying for us.”
