Summer renovation work at Odin School completed

Odin School Superintendent Belinda Kirgan told the school board Thursday evening that summer renovations at the school have been completed and the school is ready for the first day of school next Tuesday.

Kirgan outlined the improvements made.

“We got all new flooring in the elementary wing, and the floors are shiny and look really good,” Kirgan said. “We got new windows and new safety film from our safety grant. We also replaced the flooring in the small gymnasium … and we’re replacing the back walls and getting new scoreboards.”

Kirgan says there is also a new Eagle logo in the small gymnasium with the school’s new vision.

“Preserve tradition and plan for the future. This city is full of traditions. We want to preserve that and at the same time look to the future.”

The board has agreed to a silent auction for the scoreboard and back walls, which will be removed from the small gymnasium. After they are replaced, the scoreboard and back walls will be taken from the large gymnasium.

An open house and back-to-school celebration is scheduled for Monday evening, August 12, from 4 to 7 p.m. Principal Quinton Marcum says there will be hot dogs, hamburgers and various games, as well as a bouncy castle. He says the goal is to get students in the mood for the upcoming school year, which begins the next day.

The board addressed a number of personnel issues, accepting the resignations of Salina Starr and Lisa Metcalf as assistant teachers and Vanessa Hanke as high school cross country coach.

The board hired Donna Bailey as special education teacher and Hannah Rovenstine and Kelly Smith as aides. The board hired KD Lynch and Abby Wolf as student council sponsors. Ryan Hargis was hired as high school cross country coach and Rebecca Merrill was hired as junior girls’ assistant softball coach. Terry Nix was named volunteer boys’ baseball coach, Caroline Riddle was named volunteer high school cross country coach, and Bruce Parrish was named volunteer junior high hitting coach.
