Summer heat this weekend; storms and lower humidity during the work week

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (WAFB) – A heat advisory goes into effect today from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. as temperatures could reach nearly 115 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the heat index.

FIRST WARNING FORECAST: Saturday, August 17

Actual temperatures will rise above 35 degrees this afternoon, favoring scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Some thunderstorms this afternoon could bring frequent lightning and heavy rain. I expect even hotter conditions tomorrow, with actual temperatures in the triple digits and highs of 40 degrees or more that could result in a heat advisory.

Working week cold front

Once this weekend’s summer heat is over, model forecasts show a cold front moving through the Southeast as early as Monday morning, bringing with it a series of potentially strong storms for the morning rush hour. These storms could bring strong winds and heavy rain.

The front will also help bring in some drier air from the north. The drier air should help lower humidity, which should bring the heat index down below any heat warning criteria. However, actual temperatures will remain between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius.

Expanded outlook

Temperatures will remain above 35 degrees through the end of the next work week. However, with dry air moving in, morning lows should drop to around normal levels towards the end of the extended forecast, making for a much more pleasant start to the morning.
