Summary: Defending champions start with wins, Pendleton County beats Greenbrier West

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Look around West Virginia and see some of the notable results from Week 1. Defending champions Martinsburg, Fairmont Senior and Williamstown all picked up wins.

Class AAAA

Martinsburg 66, Ballou, DC 0 — The Bulldogs picked up their 14th straight win with a shutout victory over Ballou, DC. Former Martinsburg HS and Shepherd quarterback Tyson Bagent was in attendance. Bagent is entering his second season with the Chicago Bears. MHS hosts Huntington in Week 2.

Huntington 38, Hurricane 35 — A blocked field goal in the final seconds allowed Huntington to secure a three-point victory over MSAC rival Hurricane. Tayveon Wilson and Keegan Sack each scored two touchdowns for the Highlanders, while Jamari Tubbs added another point. Jordan Price’s field goal proved to be the deciding margin.

Noah Vellathiambi threw two touchdown passes to Sha’lik Hampton for the Redskins.

Wheeling Park 35, Parkersburg South 14 – Sophomore signal-caller Jay Bordas threw three touchdown passes for Wheeling Park in his debut as a starter on the varsity team, and the team emerged victorious against the Patriots.

Class AAA

Bridgeport 77, Buckhannon-Upshur 0 — The Indians set a school record for most points in a single game and scored two special teams touchdowns. Josh Love ran for three touchdowns in the win.

Class AA

Williamstown 47, Ravenswood 7 — Lynken Joy totaled 246 yards and scored four touchdowns as two-time defending Class A champion Williamstown defeated Ravenswood. WHS rushed for 492 yards. Cooper Martin scored a touchdown for the Jackets.

Roane County 36, Shady Spring 12 — Lane Watson ran for 184 yards and scored a kickoff return touchdown to help the Raiders win their season opener. Clay Walker scored two rushing touchdowns for Roane.

Class A

Clay-Battelle 44, Hundred 6 – Maverick Gum collected 90 rushing yards and three touchdowns for the Cee-Bees as Aaron LaPoe won his debut game as head coach of CBHS.

Pendleton County 27, Greenbrier West 21 – Colton Roberson caught two touchdowns and the Wildcats defeated the defending Class A runner-up in Franklin.
