Sturgis Motorcycle Rally generates $1.4 million in tax revenue

STURGIS, SD (Dakota News Now) – The South Dakota Department of Revenue estimates the 2024 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally generated nearly $1.4 million in tax revenue.

The 2024 rally took place from August 2 to 11.

The estimated $1,399,501 includes state sales tax, tourism tax, municipal sales tax, and municipal gross receipts tax.

However, temporary vendor revenue in the Black Hills decreased 3% compared to 2023.

The largest share of revenue came from state sales tax, at $790,805.

At this time last year, the department had collected $818,784 in state sales tax. The department’s 2024 revenues also included $271,322 in state tourism tax and $337,374 in municipal taxes.

896 temporary providers took part in the 2024 rally, 17 fewer than in 2023.

The Northern Black Hills, which includes Sturgis and all other communities in Meade and Lawrence counties, collected $992,067 in taxes from the 699 merchants in attendance, 8% less than the previous year.

In the Southern Black Hills, which includes Rapid City, Custer, Hill City and Keystone, there were 197 temporary vendors who collected a total of $407,434 in taxes, a 12% increase over 2023.
