Stunned guest disinvited from overseas wedding after spending $1,000 on flights

A potential wedding guest was shocked to learn she had been disinvited from a wedding at another venue after already spending $1,000 on flights to the big day.

A Redditor posted under the username “Powerful-Lettuce-999” on the popular “wedding” subreddit and wrote: “Just got disinvited from a wedding abroad.”

The guest, who lives in America, explained in the post that the bride had informed her circle of friends at the university about the wedding day in Asia a year earlier.

She had already booked her expensive plane ticket when her circle of friends received a text message from the bride saying, “Hey guys, I’m so sorry to tell you this, but I don’t have any accommodations left for all of you for the wedding.”

“I’m really sorry. I hope you haven’t booked tickets yet.”

The shocked guest privately messaged the bride and told her, “Hey, I literally just booked my tickets and everything about three days ago because our agent knew something and figured it out (the rest I don’t think, no idea).

“I’ll try to cancel, but I don’t think that’s possible. I understand that space was limited for family and stuff, so it’s fine, don’t worry.”

The bride told the Reddit user to let her know if she couldn’t cancel the flight and she would “think of something.”

The bride also told guests, “Please do not tell the rest of the group,” adding as a warning that “the hotel staff will not budge on accommodation.”

The Redditor was left with two options.

The first option is to cancel and receive a partial refund.

Regarding the second option, she explained: “I can participate and I feel like the invitation is obligatory because I was not invited.”

“If I go, my friends would feel terrible because I was allowed to go and they weren’t.”

The guest admitted in the post: “Any advice please? I’m so embarrassed because I’ve already told my friends and family that I’m invited to a wedding abroad and telling people that I’m not invited is so embarrassing.”

“I was really excited and happy for her. I find this whole thing so disgusting.

“I wish they had at least sent out the wedding invitations if they can’t offer accommodation. I would understand and book my own accommodation.”

The Reddit user went back to “edit” her post, adding, “My friend messaged her in the group chat and asked if we were no longer getting accommodations or invitations in general.”

“She told me privately that if I can’t cancel my tickets, she will adjust and accommodate me. But please don’t tell the rest because she has to trim the list.”

The Redditor provided further insights in the comments.

One person commented: “Are there no hotels or Airbnbs in the area at all?”

The guest replied, “There are a lot. That’s why I’m confused. I’ll ask them again if it’s about accommodations or the size of the wedding in general.”

Another person commented: “Can’t you guys just stay somewhere else? This is so weird.”

The Redditor replied, “Exactly! That option hasn’t been presented to us yet. But even if she says now, ‘Please stay somewhere else and come anyway,’ would you still go after she rescinded the invite? I’m not sure what to do.”

Some users have developed theories about how this unpleasant situation came about.

One person wrote: “This makes me think she invited way more people than she could accommodate and didn’t realize that many people would actually show up for her destination wedding.”

A second person added: “Sounds like the bride went over budget and is cutting her guest list to save money. The guests could just book their own hotel.”

Most users gave the guest advice.

One person wrote: “She’s trash because of this and I would honestly still go on the trip, forget about her wedding and end my friendship with her.”

The bride continued:

The bride continued: “I sincerely apologize. I hope you haven’t booked tickets yet.”

A second person added: “I would say go to Asia anyway and do something other than the wedding. That’s what I would do.”

A third person commented: “Fuck this ‘friend’. If you can’t cancel your flight, change it and go somewhere else. Life is too short to have people like that.”

A fourth person wrote: “I went to Southeast Asia alone and had the BEST time. Go to Asia and skip the wedding! Have a great time!”

A fifth person added: “I would cut off contact with this person and make a vacation out of it.”
