Strong winds from severe thunderstorms knock down trees and cut off power in parts of the KC area

Severe thunderstorms with high winds downed trees and power lines, leaving nearly 19,000 people without power in the Kansas City area Monday morning.

Evergy reported that as of 6:40 a.m. Monday, 29,467 customers across its service area were without power.

In the greater Kansas City area, which includes Johnson, Leavenworth, Miami and Wyandotte counties in Kansas and Cass, Clay, Jackson and Platte counties in Missouri, more than 13,100 customers were without power.

Most outages occurred in Johnson County, where 5,630 customers were without power, followed by Clay County with 4,495 and Jackson County with 1,555 customers without power.

Meanwhile, the Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Public Utilities in Wyandotte County reported 5,553 customers without power. Elsewhere in the metropolitan area, Independence Power and Light reported 144 customers without power.

As the storms passed through, the National Weather Service warned that wind gusts of up to 60 mph were possible.

Where is the storm damage?

Local storm reports from the weather service showed:

  • Tree limbs fell near West 64th Street and Monticello Road in Shawnee.

  • Fallen trees and branches near Johnson Drive in Shawnee

  • Broken tree limbs and property damage on W. 183rd Street near Gardner.

  • Downed power lines and power outages near Woodland Avenue in Grandview.

  • Several trees have fallen near West 87th and Riley Street in Overland Park.

  • Fallen trees and wires in Prairie Village.

  • Downed wires and power outages near Oak Street in Pleasant Hill.

  • Several tree branches have fallen and dried out near Loose Park in Kansas City.

  • A garage door was blown out and several trees and branches fell in Parkville.

  • Several fallen trees in Tonganoxie.

  • Fallen trees and branches along Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard near Oak Street in Kansas City.

  • Downed power lines and power outages near Antioch Road in Gladstone.

  • Downed power lines and power outages near Zay Drive in Excelsior Springs.

  • A 3-foot tree broke at the trunk and fell onto a car west of Leavenworth. There were no injuries.

Crews were working to restore power to customers as quickly and safely as possible, Evergy said Sunday evening on X, formerly known as Twitter.
