Music streaming service Spotify was temporarily out of service on Sunday (September 29), leaving thousands of listeners unable to access music and podcasts earlier in the day.

More than 40,000 people reported music platform outages on downdetector.com, a website where users can report problems with popular apps and services. Most of the reported outages occurred shortly after 12 p.m. ET. As of 5:00 p.m. ET, the number of outages reported on the site fell to 351.

Spotify wrote on X on Sunday afternoon: “We are currently aware of some issues and are looking into them!”

In response to the post, Spotify users complained that the outage disrupted workout routines and planned to stream a playlist at a child’s birthday party.

About an hour later, the streaming service posted that everything was looking much better. The app appeared to function normally.

Millions of people use Spotify, the largest streaming service in 2023. The music platform claims to have more than 626 million users and 246 million subscribers.
