Storms this weekend, front brings relief for the work week – Home – WCBI TV

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Some strong to severe storms are possible Saturday and Sunday, but a cold front will drive away the oppressive heat and humidity for the next week.

THIS WEEKEND: We have two threats this weekend. The dangerous summer heat will stay with us Saturday and Sunday, and all but a few very northern parts of our area are under some sort of heat warning. Expect afternoon highs in the 35s, with a possible 38s on Sunday here in the Golden Triangle. Temperatures on the heat index will reach 43 degrees, making for a brutally hot weekend. Due to the heat and humidity, the atmosphere will be very unstable as storms move in. Both Saturday and Sunday are at a high risk, with a 1/5 risk on Saturday and a 2/5 risk on Sunday. These threats are primarily for wind gusts over 60 mph, but hail is also possible, especially on Sunday. The reach/location of these storms is a little tricky to estimate. Where they move in, there is a risk of them being quite strong. On Saturday, storms are most likely in the southern part of our area, and the same goes for Sunday. The big danger on Sunday is primarily due to a cold front moving through from the north, and storms will likely form into a dangerous line by late afternoon. Where that line forms is the question, so be weather aware this weekend!

MONDAY AND AFTER: After the cold front passed through on Sunday night, we are in for some very nice days, especially for August. Highs will be limited to just under 30 degrees and here and there to over 25 degrees, and humidity should also ease up. That’s about the most pleasant thing you can expect this time of year. What I want to stress above all is that our nighttime temperatures will be lovely and we will wake up to consecutive cool mornings. Starting Monday night, temperatures will drop to just under 18 degrees every night, probably through the end of the week. A few temperatures above 15 degrees will also be possible in the northern parts of our area, making for a fall-like week. Enjoy!
