Storms of the Debby category cause tornadoes, flood roads and tear down trees

Debby brought tornadoes, flooding, downed trees and significant storm damage to parts of North Carolina this week, and the threat remains for many people.

One person died when a suspected tornado damaged a home in Wilson County early Thursday morning. The tornado also damaged a school, four homes and a church in the area, officials said.

Numerous tornado warnings were issued for coastal and central North Carolina on Wednesday and Thursday, and heavy rain and flooding occurred across much of the state. Roads were either closed because they were partially underwater or blocked by fallen trees or downed power lines.

On Wednesday, as Debby was moving to the Carolinas, a suspected tornado ripped the roof off a home in Sampson County.

North Carolina remains under a state of emergency declared Monday by Gov. Roy Cooper. Cooper said more than 350 Air National Guard troops are ready to serve. He said 17 whitewater rescue teams have been deployed east to assist during the storm and with recovery efforts if needed.

The storm is expected to gain speed as it moves across North Carolina Thursday night into Friday morning.

Photos from across the state show washed away roads, downed trees and power lines, roofless homes and damaged buildings.
