U.S. stock futures were unchanged Monday evening after the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite posted their longest winning streaks of 2024.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average were trading near the zero line. Futures tied to the S&P 500 rose 0.02 percent and futures for the Nasdaq 100 rose 0.08 percent.

The action in extended trading follows another day of gains for the major averages. The S&P 500 gained nearly 1%, while the Nasdaq gained 1.4%. Both indexes posted their eighth consecutive positive session, a first for the S&P 500 since November 2023. It was also the longest winning streak for the Nasdaq since December 2023.

Major averages have rebounded amid a dramatic decline in market volatility since the beginning of the month. CBOE Volatility Index is now at 14.7, after exceeding 65 on August 5. Strong retail sales and a report on weak inflation released last week helped ease investors’ economic concerns.

This week, investors are gearing up for the Federal Reserve’s annual Jackson Hole Economic Symposium, where Chairman Jerome Powell is scheduled to speak Friday morning. Wall Street is looking for insight into how much the central bank is likely to cut interest rates at its September meeting.

The Fed wants to signal that it is “at the peak of the curve – not behind it. But at the same time, it does not want to release the pressure too aggressively before the fire is extinguished,” said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research.

“The real question is not just the timing but the magnitude” of the rate cuts, Stovall added. Fed futures fund pricing suggests there is a 77.5 percent chance that central banks will cut rates by 25 basis points in September, according to CME Group’s FedWatch tool.

The Fed will also release the minutes of its most recent meeting on Wednesday.
