Stock market today: Dow futures stable as markets calm down after turbulent week

How are stock index futures traded?:

S&P 500 futures rose just 0.1%.

The futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average are little changed.

Nasdaq 100 futures rose 0.2 percent.

On FridayThe Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 51 points, or 0.13%, to 39,498, the S&P 500 gained 25 points, or 0.47%, to 5,344 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 85 points, or 0.51%, to 16,745.

Futures activity early Monday shows stocks greeting the opening bell with little change.

This is a welcome rebound from last week’s volatility, which began with the biggest daily decline since late 2022 and included the best advance of a similar vintage.

There is little new momentum on Monday, but over the next few trading days traders will be paying particular attention to inflation reports and indicators of consumer health, including U.S. retail sales and earnings from companies like Walmart.

“The current calm is unlikely to last long, as inflation figures and US retail sales are due to be released on both sides of the Atlantic,” says Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell.

“Concerns about the risk of a recession in the US could be either reinforced or somewhat mitigated by retail sales figures, as they are the key indicator of consumer spending, which accounts for the bulk of overall economic activity,” Mould adds.
