Stock futures barely changed, record highs for major indices in sight

Stock futures tied to major indexes fluctuated almost unchanged on Monday as investors prepared for highly anticipated earnings reports and economic data later in the week.

Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 rose 0.1%, while futures tied to the Nasdaq 100 fell 0.1%. The major indexes closed sharply higher on Friday after Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell indicated in a highly anticipated speech that the central bank was ready to cut its benchmark interest rate soon.

The S&P 500 starts the week just 0.6 percent below its all-time high from mid-July, while the Dow is less than 0.1 percent away from its record close. Stocks have recovered from their plunge earlier in the month as fears of a potential recession have eased and expectations have risen that the Fed will cut interest rates.

On Monday, economic data and earnings calendars are rather sparse, but things will be much more exciting in the next few days.

The big event this week is Wednesday, when Nvidia (NVDA) is scheduled to release its quarterly report. The AI investor darling is expected to deliver another stellar set of results. Market participants will also be closely watching the release of the Fed’s preferred inflation measure on Friday.

Nvidia shares rose 0.5% in premarket trading on Monday and were among the few mega-cap stocks to gain before the market opened. Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon (AMZN) and Meta Platforms (META) lost ground, while Alphabet (GOOGL) gained slightly.

The yield on 10-year Treasury bonds, which fell on Friday after Powell’s comments, remained stable at around 3.81 percent on Monday morning. The price of gold rose slightly to around $2,560, trading near record highs, while the price of bitcoin fell slightly to just under $64,000.
