Stellantis shortens shift at Warren Truck Assembly as Ram 1500 Classic is phased out

Stellantis has announced a reduction in operations at its truck assembly plant in Warren as it ceases production of the Ram 1500 Classic later this year. The measure could affect up to 2,450 employees.

The company confirmed that one of the two shifts would be eliminated at the general meeting, but said the actual number of workers affected is expected to be significantly lower due to provisions in the UAW contract.

“With the introduction of the new Ram 1500, production of the Ram 1500 Classic at the Truck Assembly Plant in Warren, Michigan, will cease later this year,” the company said in a statement to the Detroit Free Press.

The company has already notified Michigan authorities and the UAW of the impending layoffs, which could begin as early as October 8.

Other operations at the plant, particularly those supporting Jeep Wagoneer production, will continue to operate in two shifts. Warren Truck Assembly currently employs nearly 3,900 workers, including 3,700 UAW-represented and 170 salaried employees.

The Ram 1500 Classic has proven to be a cost-effective option for commercial vehicle customers, especially with its Tradesman model a staple for many companies. Stellantis said the introduction of the 2025 Ram 1500 Tradesman was a key factor in the decision, citing its improved electrical architecture and new technologies to improve fleet management and safety.

“In addition to any state unemployment benefits to which an employee may be entitled, indefinitely laid off employees with longer service will receive 52 weeks of additional unemployment benefits (paid by the company) and 52 weeks of transitional assistance,” the company said, assuring workers that they would also continue to be covered by health insurance for two years.
