Stellantis (Permanent representation of the STLA) plans to lay off up to 2,450 employees later this year as it discontinues production of an older model of its Ram 1500 pickup truck.

The Ram 1500 Classic is currently taking place at the Automaker factory in Warren, Michiganalongside the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. Stellantis has used the truck as a low-cost option to attract fleet buyers and customers who want to buy a pickup without breaking the bank.

But after the automaker updates the Ram 1500 for the 2025 model year, it plans to abandon the Classic. The 2025 Ram 1500 Tradesman will be manufactured at a different plant that is unaffected by the company’s plans in Warren.

“For this reason, Stellantis announced today that the General Assembly plant will transition from a two-shift operation to a single-shift operation,” the company said in a statement. “Other operations at the plant will continue to operate in two-shift operations to support production of the Jeep® Wagoneer.”

The planned changes will result in up to 2,450 workers being laid off indefinitely. The layoffs are expected to begin as early as early October. About 3,900 people currently work at the truck assembly plant in Warren.

This is just the latest wave of layoffs affecting Stellantis’ operations around the world, including in Michigan. In July, Stellantis temporarily laid off about 1,600 employees after reducing production from two day shifts to one for the month. The Detroit News reportedThese cuts were related to sales of the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, which fell 24% and 17%, respectively, in the second quarter.

Stellantis began offering severance pay to its U.S. employees last month, with employees from the vice president level down eligible. Automotive News reportedThe company employs around 11,000 people in the country.
