Steelers QB Russell Wilson reportedly won’t play in Week 1, Justin Fields to start against the Falcons

“We’re definitely prepared for all scenarios,” Falcons defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake said Thursday. “That’s our job. Two quarterbacks who have won in this league. One who’s been playing a lot longer and won the Super Bowl. They both have positive attributes that we have to be prepared for.”

Wilson and Fields joined the Steelers in March. Wilson did so a day earlier than Fields and signed a one-year deal. Fields was signed by the Chicago Bears and had one year left on his contract. Essentially, both are fighting for a future beyond 2024.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin officially named Wilson the team’s starting quarterback last week, but still warned Falcons head coach Raheem Morris about Fields.

“I think whoever plays quarterback is going to present that challenge,” Morris said Wednesday. “Mike told me to prepare for Justin Fields and that’s what we did. Russell will be able to go out there and present the challenge that he’s always presented to teams with, which I’m sure he’s put an incredible amount of preparation into the game plan to go out there and do what he needs to do. But there are roles that guys have to play, so expect the expected. That’s what we’re going to do.”

Wilson has more experience under his belt with 12 years than Fields with three. Wilson has also won nine Pro Bowls and two Super Bowls. He is a former third-round draft pick while Fields was a first-round pick. However, Fields is considered one of the NFL’s top threats.

An official announcement from the Steelers will be made 90 minutes before kickoff on Sunday; then the players who are not eligible to play must also be announced.

“I’m sure we’ll see on Sunday,” Morris said Friday of the Steelers’ quarterback situation. “Russ is pretty resilient when it comes to things like that. He’s been that way his whole career. Like I said, we’ve prepared for all their stuff and all the possibilities. We’ll be ready no matter how it goes.”
