Starbucks is discontinuing Princi-branded pastries in many Reserve stores

Starbucks is removing Princi baked goods branding from eight of its Roastery and Reserve locations in the U.S. and China, the Seattle-based coffee chain confirmed Thursday. Starbucks clarified that while the availability of menu items such as Ciabatta sandwiches and tarts will not change at these locations, Princi branding will be removed from menus and signage.

Starbucks’ partnership with Princi began in 2016, when the coffee chain announced an investment in the Milanese gourmet bakery and cafe concept. From then on, Starbucks became a worldwide licensee of the brand and began selling its baked goods in the higher-priced Reserve stores and roasteries. In 2018, Starbucks opened its first standalone Princi Bakery location in the United States in Seattle.

Going forward, Princi-branded menu items will continue to be available at 11 Starbucks Reserve locations in Tokyo as well as the Roastery in Milan.

“We look forward to continuing to offer customers the same menu of hand-crafted, artisanal foods using high-quality ingredients prepared daily by our chefs at our Starbucks Reserve locations across the U.S. and look forward to continuing to work with Princi in ours “Roastery in Tokyo and Reserve locations as well as our Milan roastery,” Starbucks said in a statement.

The decision to phase out the Princi-Starbucks partnership was a business decision made before Brian Niccol took the helm as CEO in September.

Starbucks currently has six roasting facilities worldwide (three in the US) and three reserve locations in the US. There are currently no plans to close Starbucks Reserve locations.
