St. Johns County officials are having a “serious discussion” about new garbage collection service after complaints about service disruptions

St. John’s County, Florida. — The St. Johns Board of County Commissioners will meet Monday to discuss the county’s new garbage collection service amid growing concerns and complaints from residents about service disruptions.

Last year, St. Johns County Commissioners voted to award a $28.2 million contract to FCC Environmental Services to handle garbage collection for the entire county. The company began operations in the county on August 1.

Since then, neighbors have reported that garbage cans were left in the middle of the street, garbage was left on the ground and that collection was not done correctly.

In a video posted on YouTube, Sarah Arnold, chair of the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners, addressed the service interruptions and said they expect to bring in other garbage collection companies to fill the service gaps.

“We are contractually obligated to give the FCC an opportunity to remedy the noncompliance, and there will be a serious discussion on Monday where termination is a distinct possibility,” Arnold said. “We have lost confidence in the FCC’s ability to provide accurate data and service and good faith.”

Arnold added that they would act quickly to select the company that can help them and apologized for the inconvenience.

“Our employees take this seriously and work tirelessly to ensure waste disposal reliability. We understand your frustration and know you deserve better,” Arnold said.

Residents can report garbage collection issues through the Recycle Coach app or submit a service request through the SJC Connect app.

On October 1, FCC will also take over services for Clay County.

On Friday, the county released a statement saying it was “working closely with the FCC to ensure the transition to the new garbage and yard waste service meets expectations.”

An FCC official addressed the Clay County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday and explained what happened in St. Johns County.

The employee said, among other things, that they had experienced a technology outage and that they were currently investigating how it happened, but added that the technology was now working again.
