One sport will be removed from the 2028 Olympic Games; its replacement has already been confirmed.

The 2024 Paris Olympic Games ended on Sunday, August 11, but fans are already looking ahead to the 2028 Games.

Los Angeles will host the 34th Olympic Games, 44 years after the Californian city hosted the 1984 Games.

All “traditional” Olympic disciplines were included in the schedule, including gymnastics, swimming and athletics.

However, there is one sport that will not be represented in LA, even though it made its Olympic debut in Paris this summer.

Breakdancing is not on the program for the 2028 Games; this decision was made before the start of the Summer Olympics.

Breaking made its Olympic debut on Friday, August 9 with the B-Girls competition, followed by the B-Boys competition on Saturday.

Japan took gold in the B-Girls, while Canada came out on top in the B-Boys.

However, the breaking competition was met with criticism from some viewers, mainly due to the performance of Australian participant Rachael Gunn, known as Raygun.

The 36-year-old was forced to defend herself after her unorthodox routine – which included a kangaroo jump and the sprinkler – went viral on social media.

After failing to score a single point in any of her three breaking matches, Raygun expressed her disappointment that breaking will not play a role in the 2028 Games.

“It was disappointing that the decision was made that the film would not play in LA, especially before we even had a chance to show it,” she said.

“That was perhaps a little hasty. I wonder if they are now kicking themselves?

“What is an Olympic sport? What do dressage and synchronized swimming, the 100-meter sprint and the pentathlon have in common?

“Breaking is clearly a sporting discipline that requires a high level of dedication in many different areas. It really brings a new level of excitement.”

In the absence of a breakthrough, cricket will be resurrected at the 2028 Olympic Games after a 128-year absence.

Cricket has only been part of the Olympic Games once – in 1900 – and is played in the Twenty20 format.

In addition to cricket, baseball, softball and lacrosse are also returning to the LA Games after a long absence, while flag football and squash are participating for the very first time.

The optional disciplines of skateboarding and speed climbing – the former made its Olympic debut in Tokyo in 2021 – will become permanent disciplines.

There is hope in the breakdancing community that breakdancing will make a comeback at the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane, Australia.
