PARIS – Wang Qianyi and Wang Liuyi of China have become the new queens of synchronized swimming during a tournament of premieres at the Aquatics Centre.
The twin won both the duet and team events, helping China win its first Olympic gold medals in synchronized swimming, which has been dominated by Russia since Sydney 2000.
Also breaking new ground were the silver medallists in the duet from Great Britain, Kate Shortman and Isabelle Thorpe, and the Dutch twins Bregje de Brouwer and Noortje de Brouwer (NED), who took bronze, taking home their nations’ first medals in the sport.
In the team event, which featured an acrobatic routine for the first time at the Olympic Games, the USA returned to the Olympic podium by winning the silver medal for the first time since 1996. Spain won the bronze medal for the first time since 2012, proving that the new rule changes have added more unpredictability and excitement to the competition.
