Sowing seeds for a greener future

In a collective effort to combat climate change and improve local ecosystems, the Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club (GVK Lions) took part in a special tree planting event yesterday. The initiative is part of Lions Australia’s ambitious Green Canopy project, which aims to plant one million trees across the country over the next three years.

Inspired by the Queen’s Green Canopy Project in the UK, which aimed to plant three million trees in honour of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, the Green Canopy Project is a national call to action, encouraging Australians to roll up their sleeves, get hands-on and help protect their environment.

While National Tree Day, a flagship event of Planet Ark launched in 1996, is usually celebrated on the last Sunday in July, the GVK Lions decided to celebrate it later in the season. On August 11, they joined forces with the City of Moreton Bay Environment Department and local volunteers to plant 70 trees and shrubs around the Kakowan Community Facility in Bunya.

The plants, generously funded by the City of Moreton Bay, were carefully selected to suit the local habitat and ensure they would thrive in their new surroundings. Over the course of several hours, volunteers worked together to position, support and maintain each plant, creating a thriving green space that will benefit the community for years to come.

As the Green Canopy Project gains momentum, the GVK Lions’ efforts serve as a shining example of how local communities can contribute to a larger environmental movement, one tree at a time.
