(CBS DETROIT) – Southfield police are searching for a suspect who allegedly broke into the home of a Metro Detroit rabbi Wednesday evening.

Police responded to a home in the 16000 block of Hilton around 10:40 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a home invasion. Police said the suspect, a black man believed to be in his late teens or early 20s, entered the apartment through a back door armed with a handgun and said, “I’ll take anything, give me anything.”

The residents of the house exited the house through the front door and no one was injured.

A suspect has been identified and police are in the process of taking him into custody. According to police, a woman was also involved in the incident and is in custody. The police speak of a “crime of opportunity”.

The incident occurred on the first night of Rosh Hashanah, the start of the Jewish New Year.

Santa Ono, president of the University of Michigan, confirmed that 15 to 20 students were having dinner at the rabbi’s home when the incident occurred.

“I spoke directly to local students and also some parents,” said Ono. “While we are grateful that the rabbi, his family and our students are safe, we take the safety of our students very seriously. I have requested an increased security presence outside of Chabad, JRC and Hillel and again on Friday and Saturday next week for Yom Kippur.

In addition, all students are offered advice throughout their academic life. We encourage anyone with information regarding the incident to share it with either Southfield Police or UMPD.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Southfield police at 248-796-5500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
