Southampton vs Manchester United: Premier League – BBC Sport

  • Southampton are winless in their last 14 Premier League matches against Manchester United (8 draws, 6 defeats) since a 1-0 away win in January 2016.

  • Manchester United are unbeaten in their last 12 Premier League away games against Southampton (7 wins, 5 draws) since a 1-0 defeat in August 2003.

  • Manchester United have lost just one of their last 30 Premier League games against newly promoted teams (22 wins, 7 draws) and have won 15 of their last 17 games since a 4-1 defeat at Watford in November 2021.

  • Manchester United have come from behind to beat Southampton in ten different Premier League matches – only Liverpool have more comeback wins against a single opponent in the competition’s history (11 against Newcastle).

  • Southampton have lost all three of their Premier League matches this season. They could become the first team to lose each of their first four games in three different seasons of the competition, having previously done so in the 1998/99 and 2012/13 seasons (when they were last promoted).

  • Manchester United have lost two of their first three league games in a season for the second time under Erik ten Hag (also in 2022-23). That is as many times as they have done so in the previous 29 seasons combined (2018-19 and 2020-21). They last lost three of their first four games in 1986-87.

  • Southampton (4) and Manchester United (3) have made the most errors leading to a goal in the Premier League this season. All three of Man United’s goals conceded in their last defeat to Liverpool were the result of errors. This is the first time since 2007/08 that they have made so many errors in a single Premier League game.

  • Southampton have lost 399 of their 927 Premier League games. They could become the fifth team to lose up to 400 games in the competition, and have done so in fewer games than any other team (West Ham 976, Aston Villa 1,072, Newcastle 1,090, Everton 1,128).

  • Manchester United have scored around three fewer goals than their xG would suggest so far this season (2 goals, 5.2 xG), which is the largest such differential in the competition. Southampton, meanwhile, have the second largest differential so far (1 goal, 3.5 xG) and have the lowest shot conversion rate of any team (2.4%).

  • Since keeping a clean sheet in his first Premier League game against Manchester United at Bournemouth in November 2019, Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has conceded goals in each of his last eight games against the Red Devils. His 19 goals in those games are the most he has conceded against any opponent in the competition (also 19 against Liverpool).
