Southampton: Premier League 2024-25 predictions from BBC Sport Fan

What place will you finish in the league and why?

16th – Play-off winners are easily labelled favourites for relegation but after such success at Wembley you can feel Russell Martin putting his stamp on things even though the job is done. There have also been sizeable offers made, proving that the effort is not quite over yet, showing the club’s ambition to move forward. We were favourites for relegation even as promoted sides in 2012/13, finishing 14th.

Who is the best new signing or has he not signed yet and who should it be?

The permanent signings of Flynn Downes and Taylor Harwood-Bellis were imperative given their importance last season. The early completion of the contracts allayed some fears. Is the best yet to come?

With Gavin Bazunu out until 2025 and Alex McCarthy coming under fire in pre-season, an experienced goalkeeper who is calm and confident with the ball at his feet is essential to Martin’s possession philosophy. Is Aaron Ramsdale a pipe dream?

What do you expect from your manager this season?

Martin was criticised last season for his slow and methodical build-up play, which often put us in difficult situations. He has solved many of these problems with a solid range of defensive reinforcements on the market that suit his style. I would like to see Martin be more flexible in his line-ups, especially in his selection of defenders.

Who will be the shooting star in your team?

If you were to judge this squad on preseason, it would be Sam Amo-Ameyaw or Tyler Dibling. Both of them could struggle to get minutes in the Premier League, though. My tip is 21-year-old Ronnie Edwards, who arrived from Peterborough as a ball-playing defender, a style that is tailor-made for Martin. I expect him to break through early.

What is your biggest concern?

In our last season in the Premier League we were poor on both ends of the pitch. We conceded 73 goals, a team low in our Premier League history, and we scored just 36 goals. Any hopes of survival depend on these glaring problems.
