South Carolina man dies when pickup truck rolls over and hits tree, officials say

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, one person was recently killed when a pickup truck left Interstate 95 and crashed.

The single-vehicle crash occurred Aug. 22 in Clarendon County, said Master Trooper Gary Miller.

At about 4:40 p.m., a Dodge pickup truck was traveling south on I-95, Miller said. At mile marker 104, the pickup truck went off the left side of the highway and the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to roll over and go off the right side of I-95, where it struck a tree, Miller said.

According to Miller, the driver of the pickup truck died.

The Clarendon County Coroner’s Office said the deceased driver was 51-year-old Vegas Poinsette of North Charleston, Manning Live reported.

Miller said Poinsette was the only person in the pickup and no other injuries were reported.

There was no information about whether the driver was wearing a seatbelt.

Information on why the pickup truck initially left I-95 was not available, and Miller did not say whether the crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.

As of August 18, at least 552 people will die on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, the department reported.

According to DPS data, at least four people died in accidents in Clarendon County in 2024. In 2023, 15 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
