Sources – Lions TE Sam LaPorta suffered an ankle sprain

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Tests have confirmed that Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta suffered a sprained ankle, a source told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

After the Lions’ 20-13 win over the Cardinals on Sunday, it was initially assumed that he had not suffered a serious ankle sprain.

“He sprained his ankle,” Lions head coach Dan Campbell told reporters.

Campbell said Monday that LaPaorta is taking things day by day.

LaPorta caught two passes for 36 yards and injured his ankle while blocking the Lions’ hook-and-ladder touchdown play by running back Jahmyr Gibbs in the second quarter. He was taken from the field to the locker room shortly before halftime and returned for parts of the beginning of the second half, but was visibly weakened by his injured ankle.

After his rookie season in the Pro Bowl, in which he recorded the most catches (86) by a rookie tight end in league history, LaPorta got off to a slow start in his sophomore year, catching eight passes for 94 yards in three games. He was also hampered by a hamstring injury during training camp that sidelined him for nearly two weeks.
