Sources: Eleven-year-old migrant boy arrested for violent phone robbery in New York

An 11-year-old migrant boy was arrested as the main perpetrator of a group that allegedly beat a passenger and stole his cellphone in a brutal subway robbery, the New York Police Department and police sources said Wednesday.

The baby-faced assailant and a 17-year-old boy were both taken into custody after allegedly attacking the victim around 8:40 p.m. Tuesday near the Vernon Boulevard-Jackson Avenue stop in Queens on the Manhattan-bound 7 train, law enforcement sources said.

“He just grabbed it and from then on they passed it around,” the 24-year-old victim told The Post by phone on Wednesday.

“When I resisted and tried to get my phone, they attacked me. They ambushed me,” recalled the Manhattan-based IT expert, who wishes to remain anonymous.

“They basically hit me in the back of the head. When I tried to get my things back, they ran out of the (subway) car.”

According to sources, investigators are also investigating whether the two suspects are connected to a series of robberies in Central Park.

According to sources, the young suspects were caught just hours after the subway robbery near the Roosevelt Hotel migrant shelter in Midtown Manhattan after the victim – with the help of police – managed to trace the phone back to the crime scene.

The teenagers allegedly had the stolen device with them when they were arrested at around 10:15 p.m.

The victim described the younger boy to police officers as the “main perpetrator” in the incident, police said.

“He basically provoked it,” the passenger said.

“He just jumped in my face and stuff like that.”

The victim said the boy was part of a group of four people who surrounded him.

“It was completely in Spanish. It was completely in Spanish, so everything they said was incomprehensible to me,” he said.

“It was pretty aggressive.”

The unsuspecting subway driver was shaken by the shocking incident.

“It’s pretty annoying because he’s 11 and he does stuff like that on the subway,” he said.

The 11-year-old was charged with juvenile delinquency and was later handed over to a guardian, police said.

His victim railed against the teenager’s lack of upbringing.

“Frankly, they need a stricter upbringing if their child is like that,” he said.

“Whatever they do, it doesn’t work.”

According to sources, the younger suspect is a migrant from Venezuela. However, it was not immediately clear whether he was staying at the emergency shelter at the Roosevelt Hotel.

It is unclear whether the 17-year-old alleged perpetrator is also a migrant.

According to sources, he was also taken into custody on a juvenile delinquency charge.
