Sources – Chiefs WR Rice needs further testing, extent of injury uncertain

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs were unsure about the extent of wide receiver Rashee Rice’s knee injury, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Chiefs consulted team doctors and sought a second opinion after initially fearing he had torn his ACL. However, further testing is needed to determine the extent of the injury and a timeline for recovery.

No answers were expected until next week.

Rice, who injured his right knee in Sunday’s win against the Los Angeles Chargers, is out for next Monday night’s game against the New Orleans Saints.

Rice suffered the injury after colliding with his own quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, while trying to recover from a Chargers mistake during an interception return. Both of Rice’s knees were hit in his collision with Mahomes, and the receiver’s right knee appeared to hyperextend. He was helped off the pitch and his knee was examined pitchside by medical staff before being taken on a cart to the dressing room.

Rice led the league with 24 catches in Week 4 and was second with 288 yards.

In his absence, coach Andy Reid said the Chiefs plan to distribute the ball to all of their receivers rather than asking Xavier Worthy alone to make up for lost production in Rice’s absence.
