Some Milwaukee customers are affected by a nationwide outage in Verizon service

The extent of the outage in Milwaukee is still unknown, but it is widespread in Chicago and other cities.

This story has been updated with new information.

Verizon said some phone service has been restored following a widespread outage at the company in many states, including Wisconsin.

The outage affected more than 100,000 customers, including some in southeastern Wisconsin.

“Verizon engineers are making progress on our network issue and service restoration has begun… We are working around the clock to fully resolve the issue,” the company said this afternoon.

“Our engineers are committed and we are working quickly to resolve the issue,” spokesman Ilya Hemlin told USA TODAY on Monday.

The extent of the outage in Milwaukee and elsewhere in Wisconsin is still uncertain. According to the website Downdetector, Atlanta, Chicago, Phoenix, Omaha and Washington DC were among the cities with the most reported service problems.

The Federal Communications Commission said Monday afternoon it was working to determine the cause and extent of the disruption.

T-Mobile and AT&T officials said their respective networks are working, CNET reported, and problems their users may experience could be due to trying to connect to a Verizon user without working service.

USA TODAY contributed to this report.
