Soccer catches up on tie, football prepares for Vanderbilt

In this edition of Virginia Tech Hokies News, the women’s soccer team fights back to earn a tie on the road, the men’s team returns to the field this week, and the football team begins its first week of play of the 2024 season.

Soccer can be a funny game sometimes. The Hokies women finished their three-game road trip at Monmouth on Sunday afternoon, trailing 1-0 at halftime after a dominating first half. Thankfully, it didn’t take long for them to respond in the second half.

One minute into the second half, Kendall DiMillio received a perfect pass at the corner of the Monmouth penalty area and placed the ball perfectly just under the crossbar for the 1-1 equalizer that ended the game.

The 21st-ranked Hokies return to Thompson Field with a record of 3-0-1 to host Loyola Maryland on Thursday night.

After much anticipation, the Virginia Tech football team is entering the first week of play of the 2024 season. Head coach Brent Pry and his team will travel to Nashville this weekend to play Vanderbilt at noon at Nissan Stadium.

If we learned anything this past weekend in Week 0, it’s that you can’t take anyone lightly in college football. Ask ACC newcomer SMU when they let Nevada play too long as four-touchdown favorites on Saturday night, only to score 16 points in the fourth quarter and escape with a five-point victory.

The Hokies men’s soccer team returns to Thompson Field on Tuesday night, five days after opening the season with a 4-0 win over North Florida. Virginia Tech hosts UNC Asheville in a non-league game at 6 p.m. before heading to Kentucky next week to play the Wildcats in Lexington.
