SIU Carbondale accepts nominations for honorary degrees/service awards
CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois University Carbondale is now accepting nominations for honorary degrees and awards of distinction to be presented at the May 2025 graduation ceremony.
The nomination deadline is Oct. 16. Nominations are also open for the SIU School of Medicine in Springfield. The nominating committee, comprised of faculty and university members, will submit its award recommendations to Chancellor Austin A. Lane, who will forward his recommendation to SIU System President Daniel Mahony for approval at the SIU Board of Trustees meeting on Dec. 5.
Honorary degrees are awarded to individuals who have made outstanding scholarly contributions or are of considerable prestige in a field of endeavor. The degree may also be awarded to individuals who have made unique contributions to human welfare or whose achievements have provided a distinct benefit to society. Distinguished Service Awards honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Southern Illinois, the state, the nation, the world, or the University. No University employee will be considered for the service award in the year of their retirement, although exceptionally qualified employees may be considered for the award before or after the year of their retirement.
Nomination letters must include a two- or three-page resume, curriculum vitae, or biographical sketch that includes a description of the nominee’s special contributions.
