World number one Jannik Sinner defeated Frances Tiafoe in straight sets in the final of the Cincinnati Open to win his fifth title of the season.

The 23-year-old Italian, who is struggling with hip problems, won 7:6 (7:4), 6:2 against the American Tiafoe.

After winning the first set in a tiebreak, the number one seed Sinner claimed his latest trophy in one hour and 37 minutes.

“It was a very difficult week, a tough week. I am very happy about today’s game,” he said.

Sinner is the youngest male champion in Cincinnati since Britain’s Andy Murray, who won the tournament in 2008 at the age of 21.

He added: “It was very tough mentally. I had an incredible run here and tried to do my best today. We were both pretty tired from the semi-finals.”

Sinner began the year with his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January. His success in Melbourne was followed by final victories in Rotterdam, Miami and Halle.

After his triumph in Ohio on Monday, Sinner turns his attention to the US Open – the final Grand Slam of the year – which begins on Monday at Flushing Meadows.

“Now, of course, it’s important to recover and be ready for New York,” he said.

“That’s our main goal for this US swing.”
