Single mother of four loses her home when a tree falls through Debby

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WJCL) – Debby left a single Georgia mother and her four children in a state of uncertainty.

During the storm, a tree broke through the roof of their house early Tuesday morning.

“It was just really scary. I jumped up and the first thing I did was check on my kids to make sure they were OK,” said Shakenna Conyers.

Conyers left her children’s bedroom and was awakened by the isolation and debris in her home where the tree had fallen.

“I’ve been awake since 2 a.m., walking back and forth, bathing,” said Conyers, whose house is nearly destroyed. A hole in the kitchen ceiling runs through the living room.

“I don’t even know how to be strong,” she said.

Conyers said she and her neighbors had let the housing development know before the storm that they were concerned about dead trees in the area.

She explained that a few weeks ago another tree fell on a power line.

Despite the chaos and uncertainty, Conyers said she was grateful that no one was hurt.

“I don’t want to start crying. My children are my everything and as a single mother, it’s hard to raise four children alone,” she said. “They’re all just looking at mom and wondering what we’re going to do.”

Conyer urged people to stay indoors until the storm passes. The family is now seeking help to repair the damage and move on.
