Singer refuses to perform at ex-boyfriend’s wedding after rejection

A wedding singer on Reddit refuses to perform at a former boyfriend’s wedding after being turned down.

“A friend of mine who I have been with for almost 10 years recently got engaged and started planning a wedding for the summer of 2025. She asked me to be her bridesmaid at the wedding and I happily agreed. When planning the wedding, I asked her if they would prefer a traditional wedding gift or if they would like some assistance with the wedding. I am a singer in a wedding band and we have played for free for friends and family before and we offered to play a set in exchange for food. She was very excited about the idea,” the singer began.

At her friend’s engagement party, the singer got into an argument with her friend’s groom and was “kicked out” of the wedding party. She was then completely disinvited from the wedding.

“It’s OK. I can’t pretend to be happy for them at the wedding. It’s their day. If they don’t want me there, that’s OK,” she continued.

However, the woman’s former friend insisted that she would still perform at the upcoming wedding because she had “booked” her.

“I assumed that since I was no longer welcome at the wedding, I didn’t have to give a gift. My ex-girlfriend (her words) insisted that since they had ‘booked’ us, we were obligated to perform at their wedding. For free,” the singer said.

“I told her that we are only performing for free for friends and family and that they will even pay for accommodation and travel and provide us with food at the event. If she wants us to perform, she will pay the normal fee since we are not friends. We have the option to take over the wedding but we are not doing it for free,” she concluded.

In the comments section of the post, people agreed that the wedding singer should no longer perform at the wedding.

“Remind them all that the performance was supposed to be a gift because you were part of the wedding party. Not only were you excluded from the wedding party, but you were also disinvited from the wedding and reception. If you are not allowed to attend the wedding, how are you supposed to perform? Wedding etiquette dictates that if someone is not invited to the wedding, one should not expect a gift,” wrote one user.

“What peace? They made it pretty clear you are no longer friends,” another shared.

“The performance was supposed to be your wedding present. They were disinvited, so they won’t get a present from you. Simple,” advised another.

“She doesn’t want you at her wedding. She didn’t pay a deposit or anything even though you were planning on doing it for free,” another user commented.
