LUS report from Saturday afternoon:
Lafayette Utilities System (LUS) linemen and response partners from Gainesville Regional Utilities and the City of Tallahassee, Florida, have completed Hurricane Francine restoration efforts in Houma, Louisiana, and are heading home today.

“We were happy to offer assistance to a neighboring city struggling with the aftermath of Hurricane Francine,” said Jeffrey Stewart, director of LUS.

The collaboration between LUS and neighboring cities like Gainesville and Tallahassee underscores the spirit of cooperation and mutual support that characterizes the public energy community. Through APPA’s mutual aid network, utilities across the country come together during crises to provide vital assistance and resources to communities in need.

Report from Entergy Louisiana, Saturday, 5:00 p.m.:
Entergy expects to be able to restore power to 95% of all Louisiana customers who lost power following Hurricane Francine and safely restore power by this evening.

Currently, about 22,000 customers in southeast Louisiana are without power from Francine. Most of the outages occurred in coastal areas of Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes, which were hardest hit by strong winds and heavy rains.

Using all resources at its disposal, Entergy Louisiana’s approximately 8,000-person storm team continues to assess damage while restoring power.

Assessments are nearly complete and scouts have identified damage to nearly 650 power poles, over 150 transformers and approximately 1,125 sections of distribution lines that need to be repaired or replaced.

The geography of southeast Louisiana presents unique challenges for utility companies, but our dedicated teams utilize specialized equipment such as hovercraft and swamp buggies to safely complete repairs.

Estimated recovery times
While many customers may have power restored sooner, Entergy Louisiana expects power to be restored to most customers who can safely receive service by Sunday night.

Estimated recovery times will depend on the severity of damage in each area, as reflected in the parish breakdown below. Coastal areas, including Assumption, Lafourche, and Terrebonne parishes, experienced some of the strongest winds, and recovery in those parishes will take longer.

Jefferson 14 September, 10pm
Rise 14 September, 10pm
John the Baptist 14 September, 10pm
Saint James 14 September, 10pm
Tangipahoa 14 September, 10pm
assumption 15 September, 10pm
Saint Helena 15 September, 10pm
Lafourche 15 September, 10pm
Terrebonne 16 September, 10pm

Make sure your home or business is ready for power restoration from us:

  • We cannot restore power to a location with a damaged meter base, conduit, or weatherhead (the metal pipe that leads up from the structure and contains electrical wires). These must be repaired by a qualified electrician before Entergy can restore power.
  • If there is water damage to your property, please turn off the power at either the main fuse box or the circuit breaker.

o Call a licensed electrician if necessary. A licensed electrician may need to inspect the electrical wiring on your property before Entergy can restore power to a home or business damaged by rain or flooding.

  • Even if no material damage occurs, caution is still advised.

o After power is restored, check for damage to the electrical system. If you notice sparks, broken or frayed wires, or the smell of hot insulation, turn off the power at either the main fuse box or circuit breaker.
