Weather forecast: Severe storm risk for the Midwest
On Thursday, September 19, severe thunderstorms could occur across much of the Midwest, from Des Moines and Omaha to Minneapolis.
Severe thunderstorms are expected in central Iowa late Thursday afternoon into the evening. Chances for storms increase across much of Iowa, with the highest chance for severe storms in northern Iowa.
The greatest danger is heavy hail and damaging winds, the National Weather Service said, although one or two tornadoes are also possible.
What is the storm forecast for Des Moines?
Showers are expected in Des Moines before noon Thursday, with precipitation totals expected to be less than a tenth of an inch. Des Moines can expect more isolated strong to severe storms overnight, the NWS said on social media, possibly until 1 a.m.
When will there be severe weather in Iowa today?
Severe storms could develop across Iowa around 3 p.m., with the highest danger between 5 and 8 p.m. However, the NWS says storms could linger late into the night.
